Rwanda

Rwanda is establishing itself as a regional leader in ICT for development. As part of this, two centers have been created under the ministry of education: the Rwanda ICT Research and Training Center at the Kigali Institute of Technology, and the Geographical Information System and Remote Sensing Centre at the National University of Rwanda.

These centers are part of the Rwanda Development Gateway Group, and stem from Rwanda’s commitment to the goals of the foundation at the national and regional level. Rwanda’s Country Gateway – called the Rwanda Development Gateway – is also part of the group.

Regional Research and Training Center (RITC)

RICT is building Rwanda’s technical human resource base to ensure that ICT is effectively used in education and throughout the economy. The center is developing market-driven ICT courses and establishing partnerships with similar national and international learning centers.

The center has trained more than 4,000 teachers in basic ICT literacy as part of a national program to get computers and the Internet into secondary schools. About 500 teachers and two groups of demobilized soldiers have learned computer maintenance. And several short and long courses have been organized in UNIX/LINUX, CISCO routers, Wireless Implementations, Graphic Communication technology, Advanced Access and more.

Geographic Information Systems Centre

Geographic information systems (GIS) are becoming an important and powerful tool for development. Rwanda’s Geographical Information System and Remote Sensing Centre has been created to encourage the use of applied research in this area, to build human capacity in GIS, and to act as a regional outreach center for GIS and remote sensing.

The center will provide geographic content to Development Gateway Foundation’s planned Sub-Saharan Africa regional Web portal. It is also building a spatial data clearing house and various Internet data distribution systems. Please click here to make a donation to support the work of the Development Gateway Foundation.
